Best Religion Joke Ever?
In class tonight my professor told this classic Emo Phillips (what a creeper...loved that odd 80s guy) joke. Fantastic. Hypocrisy of Denominating, Todd?
Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"
Northern Conservative†Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.

Where the Magic Happens
School starts on Monday so I thought I'd share some pictures of my classroom. The desks are for some minilessons and individual writing and reading workshop. The tables are for group work and reading workshop. The back room is for peer writing conferences, the middle shelf for writing supplies, and the bookshelf for, well, books. Special thanks to Jeff Davis for inspiration for the small book board, where students will post recommended books.
It's not nearly as exciting as pictures of Switzerland and India, but it's my life. At least I get to hang with the President.

the Power of Disconnection
A challenging word:
"If your eyes are glued to your Blackberry and your ears stopped up by your iPod, it's hard to hear what might be going on inside you. Cutting back on these gadgets and not answering every single email and phone call right away may lead to a measure of calm...sometimes you have to disconnect to connect. Likewise, if you're completely absorbed in the electronic world, obsessively checking email and constantly returning phone calls, it becomes impossible to experience the quirky surprises in the world around us."

the week between

well, i am back from india. it was an absolutely amazing trip. that said, it is so nice to be back in the united states where logic at least exists, even if many choose not to use it. i also suspect that i am allergic to the entire country of india. i had a couple pretty rough moments there.
being part of designing and building a piece of architecture in just a few weeks was incredible. it is a pretty solid little building. i will send along some pictures soon. well, it basically looks just like the hanuman temple in delhi in the picture above, so just imagine a huge red monkey-man surrounded by the himalayas instead of a city. same thing.
anyway, a week to relax (meaning, a week to do school work and some work-work) before the trip to switzerland.

Anchor Bay Triathlon 2010
1st in age group, 15th overall!
Swim: 16:42
T1: 1:23
Bike: 31:15
T2: :39
Run: 23:12
Total Time: 1:13.08
A solid 7 minutes faster than last year. Of course, it wasn't t-storming the whole race...twas about a perfect day for the race.
Biblical Church?
"It is one of the great ironies of contemporary American church life that the congregations that say they are most based in scripture often hear the smallest portion of scripture read in worship. Christians believe that God speaks through Scripture, whether or not a preacher is there to comment on it, so don't be stingy with the Bible in worship!"

Best Quote from the Red River Gorge Attack Story
"This was a private incident between me and a bear," he said. "I was chomped on by a bear, and he was a bad bear, but that doesn't speak of all bears."

Forest Hills 5K
Last weekend we ran the Forest Hills 5k.
Cheryl | 23:18.00 | 7:31 miles
1st place in age group!
12th overall female
57th overall
Brian | 24:02.00 | 7:45 miles
5th place in age group
63rd overall male
82nd overall
Probably the best part of the FH5K was Meka in the Future Forest Hill-ers race. The 3 year olds were lined up first, we told Meka to run to Rosie Red (the mascot) when the whistle blew (forgot to tell her to wait until the 4 year olds started). So...when the 3 year olds started, she took off diagonally across the field to Rosie. For the record she pretty much destroyed the 3 year olds.

Charles Wesley's "A Man of Fashion"
A man of taste and dissipation ...
In sleep, in dress, and sport and play
He throws his worthless life away...
With a disdainful smile or frown
He on the riff-raff crowd looks down;
The world polite his friends and he;
And all the rest are - nobody!...
Custom pursues, his only rule,
And lives and Ape, and dies a Fool.

He throws his worthless life away...

And all the rest are - nobody!...
